Garçon de pompadour

Mikey Kardashian is the garçon de pompadour – his look, his work and his style blows me away. I always feel I want to know more about him, on twitter he intrigues me, his world and hair life excites me, so I asked him a few of the things I was dying to know and I thought I would share them with you!

Hey Zoë’s World my name is Mikey Kardashian and I’m a freelance hair stylist in London. I specialise in hair extensions and big sexy hair in general. My mantra is ‘Expert in excess, master of all things fake and fabulous,’ in all honesty more is more. I also throw seasonal charity events – a great excuse to throw a party and get all my friends together for a good cause. The last one was December which was held in aid of Cancer Research.

Zoë Irwin: Why hair? There could have been many a chosen path for you, so what led you to this one?
Mikey Kardashian: I originally studied fashion at school and was always interested in how trends change every season, whether it be through colours, textures, shapes – and without even noticing it society adapts to these trends. I was then having a conversation about it with my hairdresser at the time while I was still studying, and she mentioned how it’s so similar with hair, and as I always had an exact idea of how I wanted my hair, she thought I would make a good hairdresser. It’s something that I’d never thought about until then, but couldn’t get it out of my mind after that. It wasn’t until I met a stylist called Gille Gonsalves while working for Daniel Hersheson that I knew I wanted to do hair extensions. The rest is history!

ZI: How often do you change your look, what inspires this and what are your favourite personal looks?
MK: I change my look whenever I feel uninspired with what I’m looking at in the mirror. I love adapting my hair and makeup to my mood, a bleached brow, straight hair, wavy hair, short hair, a hair piece, be it blonde or brunette, whatever takes my fancy. I also love changing my look for an event, for New Year’s Eve I dyed the back and sides of my hair a bright blue/purple with some CrazyColour and faded it out through the roots of the top. It was such a fun look for the night.

ZI: What inspires your look?
MK: I’m not sure really, my look is very androgynous. When I go out it’s all, big hair, big makeup and big lashes, but paired with classic menswear. I then throw in some killer shoes and a clutch bag. I like blurring the lines between what’s masculine and feminine and when my look provokes a reaction. I love the theatre of it and making people take a second look. I normally stick to the same style though, switching up colours, textures, and designers. I quite like having a look that I don’t really stray from, something that reminds people of me. Jared Leto recently gave me the nickname Garçon de pompadour at an afterparty he threw at Shoreditch House, I guess that sums up my look to perfection, no?

ZI: When I think of the French term for hair styling – to coiffure – it makes me think ‘to coiff’ could describe your work. How would you describe it?
MK: I feel my work has always been inspired by glamour. I want to make everything that little bit more fabulous. I love the drama of a big bouncy blow out – that feeling after you’ve taken out some heated rollers, shaken it out and swept it forward over your client’s shoulders.

ZI: Which nighttime pursuits give you the most inspiration – where are your top places to play?
MK: In London, Circus is by far my favourite club night around, the crowd is amazing and everyone really makes an effort with their look – it’s as if it inspires everyone that goes to just be a little more daring and really get into the mood of the night. You can’t help but get caught up in it all. Jodie Harsh really does know how to throw a party. Meat@East Bloc is another cool night, with the coolest club kids in london dancing up a storm to the dirty bass lines of Kris Di Angelis, my favourite London DJ. His sets enrapture the whole vibe of the night… amazing! I’m also a huge fan of dining out with friends, I always try and grab one great meal a week with them. My all time fave restaurant is Hakkasan – the music, the food and the whole feel of the place is amazing. In New York, there are so many amazing places to party. I feel inspired the whole time. Vandam@Greenhouse, with the astroturf on the walls, ivy on the ceilings and thousands of crystals above the dancefloor, while the best of New York’s club scene dance their hearts out – amazing. The views from New York’s Boom Boom Room can’t help but inspire, they’re breathtaking. And then there’s new London club The Box – wow, now that’s intense.

ZI: What products do you love right now?
MK: My products I use don’t vary much, L’Oréal Infinium lumiere hairspray is my favourite, and I’m never without pli, fix design, hot style constructor and liss control serum all by L’Oréal tecni art. Also, big shine shine spray, styling creme, and grooming creme by Bumble and Bumble. Another product I adore is Extrait Nutri-instant a product I picked up in Paris by Kérastase Nutritive. A fantastic leave-in treatment that doesn’t weigh the hair down when styling!

ZI: Let me peek inside your personal beauty kit – what are your must-haves?
MK: Products you’ll never find me without are MAC lip conditioner, SUQQU Extra Off cleansing cream, Crème de La Mer moisturising cream, REN glycolactic skin renewal peel mask and the scent I always wear is Seductive by Boadicea the Victorious. Another thing I can’t live without is my three-week manicure by Nails Inc. As a hairdresser, my nails really do take a beating and the three-week bio-sculpture manicure doesn’t chip, doesn’t soften your nails, and it stops nails breaking and discolouring. I’m not sure what I’d do without my perfect french manicure! I’m also a total make-up junkie, I adore trying new products and I am constantly updating my make-up bag. I have a big beauty box with products I love too much to throw out but don’t use on a daily basis, it stays firmly in my bathroom. Other than that I always have a Louis Vuitton wash bag with my day-to-day makeup. I couldn’t live without Laura Mercier secret camouflage, RMK liquid foundation, Armani pressed powder, YSL Touche Eclat, MAC contouring powder in Soft Meow, Deep Throat blusher by NARS and YSL false lash effect mascara in ultra noir.

ZI: What’s your essential work kit?
MK: My kit always has a full set of brushes with doubles of my face sizes, all with decent rubber handles. I hate it when you can’t get a good grip on a brush. I always carry two Mason Pearson brushes with me as they are fabulous for helping you dress out hair. A good hairdryer is always needed, I always use the Parlux 3200. I’m also never without my Daniel Hersheson waving tongs and my BaBylis Pro heated rollers when working.

ZI: Where do you go to buy great hair?
MK: The only hair I use for my extensions is from hair merchant Michael Ratajczak. His hair is the best I’ve found and all the hair I use I’ve hand-picked and had mixed for each client personally. It’s the personal touches like this that make me so proud of all the hair extensions I do. But if it’s a shoot I’m working on and I need a quick fix, I always use Lauren Pope’s gorgeous Hair Rehab London clip-in extensions, the hair’s great, they have a fantastic colour selection so it’s always easy to match the model and they’re 100 per cent human hair so can be heat-styled. You get a lot of hair on each piece so they’re great for getting that thick, glamourous look I’m obsessed with, in an instant!

ZI: Which company makes the perfect wigs for celebrities and editorial shoots?
MK: The best wigs that I’ve ever used have been from Mandeville wigs, The hair they use is second to none and each wig is made by hand and is of amazing quality – you can really tell the difference.

ZI: Whose style do you adore?
MK: Wow… there is so many, old and new. But a huge inspiration of mine, and someone whose style I adore is a friend of mine named Phillipe Blond. He’s a fashion designer from New York and the clothes he makes are out of this world. His embellished corsets have dressed some of the most famous women in the world. His ability to dress a woman so she feels a million dollars is like no other, his style is feminine, sexy and all woman. When Phillipe ‘drags up’ he embodies the woman he’s dressing for – the iconic blondes of our time… Check out his A/W10 show for New York Fashion Week -

ZI: What are some of your secret tips?
MK: Hmm, a strong brow makes anyone look polished and elegant, I have my brows threaded every 3 weeks to keep them looking perfectly in shape. Don’t try too hard when it comes to accessorising – A killer pair of shoes and bag will make anyone look and feel amazing. I’m a huge fan of botox and fillers/lip fillers. Prevention is key and I make sure I stay looking my best with little tweaks every few months.

ZI: What’s in your magazine pile and on your bookshelf?
MK: My magazine choices are so varied – Vogue, LOVE, Tatler, Attitude, Heat, Grazia. The books I read are always easy reads that don’t take much thought. Bergdorf Blondes by Plum Sykes is a favourite of mine.

ZI: Who is your ultimate style icon, if you were a starlet, who would you be?
MK: It has to be Victoria Beckham, her ability to constantly look impeccable amazes me. She changes her look all the time and manages to pull anything off with ease. Also, her transition into very credible designer has been amazing to follow.

ZI: What is a perfect day in Mikey’s World?
MK: Waking up around 10am, checking my emails over a cup of coffee and then heading to meet a friend for an early lunch, somewhere casual like Shoreditch House where we can lounge around catching up and having a gossip over a glass of champagne, before heading off to do a bit of shopping. Grabbing a bit of afternoon tea and then going for a long pamper session, having my nails done at Nails Inc and my lashes done by Juliet McCormack (my lash guru) as well as a facial, before a late dinner around 9pm or 10pm. Then a night out partying. The way to my heart is simple: good company, good champagne, good food and good conversation.

ZI: How do I get the ultimate eyebrows?
MK: Threading is great for keeping a good shape, tint your brows to help frame your face, I always use Blink for mine. I’m dying to try Nilam Patel’s HD Brows, I’ve been hearing about them non-stop and it’s next on my list.

ZI: What is your ultimate brow tip?
MK: Invest in a great brow brush and a good brown eyeshadow (any MAC store would be able to tell you the right shade for your colouring, I use embark by MAC), I always use a brow wax to smooth down my brows first as I find that gets me a great shape, but keeps it looking soft yet sharp.

Salon Inspiration

I am putting together ideas for for colour and styling in the salon, which I take from current trends. I visit lots of bookshops and gather magazines from Italy, the USA, England and Australia, I love the different visions they all have and the way a trend is translated worldwide. Flicking through and cutting out stories and ad campaigns, I organise looks into sections I wish to focus on.

I like to play around with layering techniques, concentrating on trends I have seen in the world of celebrity, on TV and in fashion magazines. One of my new styles is designed around the trend for vibrant reds and coppers, and it’s important to give it a catchy name. I love a name that makes you visualize the colour, and it will often take me longer to come up with than the technique! So I sit at home with all the images laid out around me and a thesaurus to hand. I often walk around for days testing a name out on friends and clients, which I did for my Cobaine Chic. For the often called ‘dip-dye’ trend I was influenced by the rooty blonde of Kurt Cobain but wanted to attract a upmarket crowd for the Chelsea salon that I developed it for. Thus it became Cobaine Chic and we sent out a mood board of images of Kurt and Annie Morton with the press release. At the moment I am inspired by the topknot hair styling that is all around East London, right on my doorstep! I put the hair into a high pony then tease it slightly and weave and slice sections through this and then balliage the front hairline. It is a technique that has delighted my clients as it has given texture and a sunshine effect. If you shut the world out for the afternoon with images all around you it is amazing what you come up with! It’s my ‘inspire me’ day and I do it every few weeks!

A Soft Touch

I am obsessed with clean, soft, flyaway hair – it feels innocent yet flirty and always summery. I achieve it with a mixture of products that have become a finely-tuned recipe! But I change things up from season to season and try different products, at the moment I love the Redken Rootful spray, though I often use it through the midlengths and ends too. I spray through section by section and then apply dry shampoo, at the moment I am using Batiste Blush. Then I sprinkle on Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion, something new to my kit that I absolutely love! It makes tresses double in volume and gives great hold to the hair that I tease and curl or iron! It must be a girl thing as on the days I do this, the models always go home with the hair left untouched – they seem to love it too!

RIP Terry Calvert

I am so saddened by the loss of Terry Calvert. To my generation of hairdressers he was one of the most prominent figures, his passion for the craft blew me away and it was incredibly infectious. Through working with the Fellowship of Hairdressing, I was lucky enough to spend time with Terry, and in Australia I presented shows alongside him. He was just so much fun and incredibly inspiring creatively. It is a huge loss to the industry.

Georgia and Luke equals amazing hair

I have the biggest hair crush on Georgia Jagger, I really want to be her right now! When I opened January’s British Vogue with the story shot by Alasdair McLellan, I whooped with delight: the hair, the hair! Luke Hersheson styles beautiful hair and this is him at his best. A tong brushed through with the finish on hair that only a Mason Pearson achieves, elegant and gorgeous. If I were in a salon this is the style I would focus on for the new season, the finish sits equally as well on all ages. We may not get the famous lips so easily, but this is a hairstyle that is achievable, and I’m sure Luke and his dad Daniel will offer it in their famous Blow Dry bars.

Margot Tenenbaum

If you can’t see the above video, please click here
This is my favourite character played by Gwyneth Paltrow, from a ‘must-see’ film of mine, The Royal Tenenbaums. I love the dirty blonde bob she has, as well as the styling, it brought about a phase where I decided to dress in a very similar way! It is a 2001 American comedy-drama directed by Wes Anderson and written by him and Owen Wilson. It follows the lives of three gifted siblings who experience great success in youth, and even greater disappointment and failure after their eccentric father leaves them in their adolescent years. I just love the ironic and absurdist sense of humour that pervades this film.

Make Me Slick Make Me Shine

A huge trend for S/S11 is the neat groomed shiny hair. Often twisted or in a ponytail, a small headshape with varying degrees of shines. Seen at Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Philip Lim and many others. Where in past seasons there has been comb marks through wet shine, this season is almost seamless. I achieved the look for a shoot for The Guardian with a dressing brush and have found pomades are better than gels for it. I love the luxe finish you get from a pomade, it’s a different reflection than a gel, more satiny.

There are three that I love the most. The first two are by Aveda and part of the Brilliant range. The dark blue jar is a humectant pomade that gives a high-shine lacquer effect, and the white jar is an anti-humectant that gives a satin finish. The trick is to use the tiniest amount (as the brush spreads it so much) and I tend to apply it on the edges and brush inwards.
The other is by Philip B called Créme of the Crop. I was given this to judge at the GQ Grooming awards and it has stayed in my kit ever since. It gives a really satiny chic shine.
Practice the look now and use pomade to give a modern edge to a pony.

Shu Uemura Brushes

With some excitement I have made an addition to my brushes, the Shu Uemura round brushes. Now my brush family is a very tight-knit group made up of seven Acca Kappa brushes from Italy (home of the large bouffant) and four Mason Pearson brushes. Others have sometimes been fostered for a while, we still talk about the celebrity brush with the bright red handle that was used on Desperate Housewives that arrived, but didn’t really fit in. The Shu Uemura round brushes are glossy and chic, the bristles are real, strong and with the turbo blast from my dryer stay firm and don’t melt. The styling effect they have on the hair is smoothing as you blow dry, and they hold the tension necessary for volume. They sit happily on the beautiful dressing tables that belong to the celebrities I style. And more importantly to me, they withstand the hourly shampooing that I give them to remove residue and hair. If I had a salon then these little lacquered lovelies would be the brushes for me.

Manicure-all

Nail art and trends have lifted my little world of hair in many ways. Now it is more than two years since I launched my first nail collection at Hari’s salon in Chelsea, and yet they continue to enthrall me and inspire me.

Last week I visited Hari’s new salon on the King’s Road and with their resident nail expert Yoko, I designed the special Christmas nail. What I love the most about my job is that I am able to mix with incredibly talented people, drawing from their abilities and inspirations to create new beauty ideas.

Yoko is creating new blending techniques with gels that are so pretty, we both put our ideas together and try nail after nail, colour after colour, glitter and stars until we find it.

And when searching for inspiration, I often turn to the girls at WAH Nails, they are my absolute favourite and have taken nail art to another level. Nail queen Sophy Robson is another big favourite of mine, the two are just so inspiring!
I follow Sophy and WAH on Twitter and their nails lift my day. In fact, I read many nail blogs just for my own love of nail art. The crazy thing is I am unable to do nails myself!

Nails have made a part of what I do so successful, The Sunday Times Style said I had helped put nail art back on the map. I now visit nail bars twice a week and use gels to keep the polish on. Maybe it seems silly to some people, but it makes me so happy to look down on gleaming coloured nails.

When launching salon beauty services, I mainly base them on personal beauty highs: how things make me feel, how things make me look. See what these guys are up to as well, it blew me away!

Back in the game

My trainer Josh Davies has put together some videos for hairdressers! Here are some easy exercises that anyone can do at home or in the gym to strengthen and activate your back muscles, an important step when correcting bad posture…

1. Bird-Dog: A weird name, but a great exercise to activate and strengthen your posterior chain (ie glutes, spinal erectors and trapezius).

If you can’t see the above video, please click here

2. Back Extensions:  Another simple exercise to do to strengthen your back muscles.

Wrist rescue

Five years ago, I developed RSI (repetitive strain injury) in my arms and wrists. It was so bad that I was told, much to my horror, that I would have to change my craft and give up hairdressing. At one point I was unable to lift anything – I even dropped a saucepan of boiling water as my wrists gave way.
I had to stop cutting hair for six months and undergo fulltime treatment, costing me thousands of pounds. I had acupuncture, physio, massages and finally was lucky enough to meet the most incredible woman, Michelle Franks who used a variety of treatments that gave me back the use of my wrists.
Since then, I have weekly treatment and so posture is a subject close to my heart and I wanted to share a few things with you. Mainly in the hope to help other hairstylists avoid RSI. Ten years ago it was far from my mind and I wish I knew then what I know now!
A recent study examined the upper arm postures and movements of hairdressers over the course of four weeks. This study concluded that they may be at risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders in the neck and shoulders. A common complaint from hairdressers is a condition called Kyphosis. It refers to the rounding of the upper back and shoulders.
The positions necessary for hairdressing can lead to a gradual lengthening of the spinal ligaments, which can then increase the curvature of the spine. So what to do?
I have asked my trainer Josh Davies  to help me, and he has offered some tips.
Maintaining a good posture is beneficial for many reasons, including:

• Keeping bones and joints in the correct position so muscles can be used properly.
• Preventing unnecessary fatigue as muscles are being used more efficiently.
• Preventing the spine being set in irregular positions.
• Facilitating breathing (try taking a deep breath while in a slouched position and then in an upright position, notice the difference).
• Improving your image. People who maintain a good posture tend to give off a certain level of assertiveness.

Contrary to popular belief, keeping a good posture does not mean holding your spine entirely straight. To keep your spine in this position involves constantly tensing your back muscles, which can easily lead to fatigue, and therefore back pain.
So, what is the correct way to hold yourself? Here are some pointers to maintain the natural curves of the spine:

• Hold your head straight; don’t push your head forwards or backwards!
• Your earlobes should line up with the middle of your shoulders.
• When standing still, make sure your weight is evenly distributed across both of your feet, try not to rest your weight on one foot.
• Check your posture regularly – every time you’re near a mirror or car window!  Use certain things as cues to check your posture, for example every time your phone rings.
• Loosen your shoulders, don’t force them too far backwards.

I have learnt so much and if I can help anyone please leave your email in my comments box and I can let you know what worked for me!

Blow Dry

I’ve taken to blow drying my hair and am quite taken with the effect this has had! Now this may seem odd to you as I am the first to herald the effects of a blown-out head of hair. When I was at Headmasters I designed the blow dry menu, taking styles that I had learnt from the talented chaps on Guido’s for the likes of Versace and Balenciaga and making them available on the high street.

But when I did press appointments championing these very styles, I did it with a scruffy tousled head of hair that in the last five years became my signature look. I could call it beachy, maybe bed hair. It is a look that has made my mother despair for many years. I even sported it (I grimace now) when I met one of my biggest hair heros, John Frieda. Anyhow, in my quest for the perfect blow dry product formula for shoots I took to my own barnet. With one side blown out with Fekkai and the other with Shu Uemura.

I went out for the night.  The effect was quite dramatic. So many ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, I wondered just how scruffy I had become! My best friend made a double take and said it was the softest my hair had looked in years. My man said I looked ‘chic’ – a word NEVER used when describing me. It made me walk taller – how mad! The power of a new look, the power of the blow dry! Of course I knew it all along but I guess we all need reminding sometimes…

Amber Le Bon

I first met Amber Le Bon at the East London music festival Lovebox. She was there with her sister Tallulah to support her father, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran. The first thing I noticed before I recognised her was her hair.

Middle-parted, super long and so naturally shiny. It is the texture we spend so much time trying to mimic in fashion. I wondered what it must be like to be in a huge crowd, watching people rock out to your father and sing along to his tunes. How incredible to be the child of one of the first supermodels and the lead singer of one of the biggest bands of the ’80s.

Then I was booked to shoot with her for a Russian magazine with Emma Tempest. To give her a totally different look we used a very dark brown wig on her. I was in Germany when I was confirmed for the job, so I made a call to HAIRaisers in Acton.

The great thing about them is that you can view the shade chart online, the guys at the office are so used to hairstylists calling with last minute requests for hairpieces and wigs that they guide you through – it’s a life saver!?

So I bought a real hair lace top wig that they had biked to my home. I spent the night before the shoot blowing it out to flatten all the roots and matt it down. I used a thickening spray and razored away a lot of the hair as it was so thick. It felt like a bit of a hair crime to cover up her natural look, but it gave her a very different style. So many people are quick to jibe the children of the famous, but actually she was one of the hardest working models I’ve shot with! She never complained and was a lot of fun. The way she wrapped her American Apparel chains around her boots made me want to be 20 again!

Gelled Up

I am shooting a story for The Independent with a neat, gelled look. So I have been testing products to see which hair gel will give me the look I desire. Much to my amazement, as I search in my product bags (which are two large American Apparel weekend bags) I have 13 different gels and 17 different hair mousses! I choose four that I think will be ideal and squeeze a small amount of each into a tint bowl. Then I set up ‘Sibil’, who is one of my doll heads. She has had a busy week!

Yesterday she was up at dawn as I decided to try out a few different braids on her for another beauty story I was shooting. I had woken up at 6AM with an image in my head and was fretting that it may have not been achievable!

For The Independent shoot, I started by dividing the front of her head into four sections and using a tint brush I painted on the products every few millimetres. I am looking to see which one has the shine I desire and the right hold for the look.

The products I am using are Sebastian Gel Forte, a strong hold gel that has some flexibility; Paul Labrecque, daily style with mineral crystals for a healthy shine; New Life blue styling gel, from Pak, my local afro hair and beauty supplier; and Sebastian Liquid Steel, sculpting for shine and hold as strong as steel!

I waited an hour to see how they dried out, and then I put a light near them and took a few shots to see which captured the light, as I wanted. This is a technique that I have used for years, often doing the same blow-dry on hair that has different products in each section. It’s the best way to test products, especially before a big shoot. My verdict is that Paul Labrecque was the one for a wide tooth comb gel look, and that Sebastian Gel Forte is the best for my lacquer head look. Sibil gets a shampoo and is put back in the cupboard, ready for next time!

The Night of Two Parties

First of all, faithful blog readers, I would like to apologise for my absence. I have had many long days and not a single day off for a month, so I have been unable to update you. The funny thing is, I have had at least five entries in my head, I just haven’t had the time to type them up.

Why do all the good things come at once? I found myself asking this earlier in the month when I was invited to two different events, both on the same day. The first was to The It List/Most Wanted awards, the second was the Elle 25th birthday party. It was one of those times you wish you could split yourself in two, but instead I decided simply to run from one to the other.

My afternoon started at the Elle offices, which had such a buzz about them. All the staff were making last-minute dress decisions – the Westwood or the Erdem? – in between tapping away at their computers and making calls. I have always wanted to be an Elle girl; I’ve read the magazine from day one. The girls are so effortlessly cool, but also quirky and  fun.
I styled Elle editor Lorraine Candy with a Mad Men-influenced jaunty ponytail. We threw open the September magazine and used the Louis Vuitton campaign as reference. Lorraine wore a black Vivienne Westwood dress and looked just like my favourite Mad Men character, Betty Draper.

Then I took a car straight to The It List/Most Wanted Awards and I was probably the only guest who turned up with a hair kit. Most ladies walked in with neat clutch bags; I walked in with 24 kilos of tongs, dryers and product – typical!

There was such a buzz about the room – excitement and nervousness mixed together. I saw the industry’s biggest names and when I went to chat to them they were all flustered – these were the awards that they really wanted! This year I actually sat back in a corner to watch it all unfold. I was on a table with Angelo Vallillo and it was so lovely to see him as he was part of my Project X team years ago; his passion for the craft is quite dazzling.

The speeches that came from the winners this year were incredible. So much so, I had to reapply my eyeliner after welling up with tears at the passion and emotion.

After getting myself together, I hot-footed it to the Elle birthday bash that was held at The Whitechapel Gallery, where they held a debate between Vivienne Westwood and gallery director Iwona Blazwick on the art of fashion. When I arrived at 10.30pm the party was in full swing with designers and models and celebrities dancing to early ’90s tunes. Champagne was flowing and it was such a great atmosphere. I had so much fun!

Charity Run

Later this month I am heading to sunny Swansea to take part in a charity run. It is a great day out for us girls and we have decided to run in aid of Hafan Cymru, an organisation focused on preventing abuse and promoting freedom for women, men and children who are escaping domestic violence. It also aims to educate young people in Wales about abuse and its consequences. I am training every day at the moment on the treadmill and my friend Katherine Jenkins has got a group of us together to do practice runs in Hyde Park, so we are taking it very seriously! If you could sponsor me it would be amazing!

The Freja layer

August’s cover of British Vogue was beautifully bright orange and pink with girl of the moment Freja Beha Erichsen gracing the cover. As it sat there on the shelf, I wanted to scream out “Woo-hoo”, but this is often unwise in WHSmith! There it was, a hairdresser’s dream cover, I thought. Freja has the perfect haircut not only for the season, but that type of cut that only really comes around every few years or so. A big impact cut, wantable, wearable, cute, yet hot… I could go on and on.

Of course she has an amazing face but this cut has the right amount of many things that make it suitable for so many people – hurrah!
She has had her hair like this for a while of course, but when put on the cover it makes it all the better to many. The hype started picking up speed when Grazia this week ran a whole feature on it, saying “this chestnut-brown layered cut is about to spark the kind of hair hysteria not seen since The Rachel”. So I just wanted to add my tiny little bit! My concern is that some hairstylists may take off the front corner in a slightly rounded way while over-excited that they are getting to cut in major layers. Freja’s cut, although layered, has the strength of a square baseline. Cut off that front corner at your peril as you could be gazing in the mirror awaiting the cool Freja Layer only to see a slightly mumsy version and wonder where it all went wrong. But this is a minor point, it’s such a beautiful style that will transform many a chick to a more modern and cooler look. What I love about the fact that it’s on Freja, who is THE model of the moment, is that because she features in so many ad campaigns this season, you get to see so many style versions of the cut, from tousled loosely to a full blown-out and tong, which is incredibly useful to both the client and the hairstylist. I put it to you that it could not be better, I adore the Freja Layer.

Paris

I have just spent a long weekend in Paris and it was just what the style doctor ordered! A girlie weekend, it left me feeling like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman as I stayed at Hotel Le Bristol. The place has been open since 1925 and is just beautiful. Its restaurant, Le 114 Faubourg, has three Michelin stars and is so worth a visit even if you are staying elsewhere. They have a fashion high tea at 3.30pm everyday where they show the latest Paris collections while you sip on the finest blends and eat delicacies. I love that it makes you feel like someone else for a while! In my head I was a narrow-hipped, beautiful Parisian lady viewing the collections to see what outfits would suit my social diary. We shopped for the winter season excitedly in the Isabel Marant boutique, which had mostly sold out back in London.

On Saturday we had a personal shopper and I cannot recommend it enough. He took us to places that we had never heard of, including a secret boutique with no sign or shopfront, it was like stepping into a Tim Burton film. But it sold incredible clothes with designers that we had never heard of and had collections of Maison Martin Margiela that are unavailable in London. He also taught us about the cuts of French denim designers as he was a clothes stylist that also did personal shopping.

Of course, I had to stock up on hairbrushes and pins, so I went to Strasbourg/St Denis, where there is a road dedicated to hair and beauty shops called Passage de l’Industrie 75010, Paris. It is well known that France excels in hair styling goods, the pins are stronger and the brushes are exquisite. I have bought small teasing brushes back from Paris for years, and they now get taken out in many a lady’s evening clutch bag to backcomb and flick up a style through the night. We sold them at Hari’s and called them the kitten brush. Anyway, here’s my list of a few great places to visit if you go to Paris.
Isabel Marant
L’Eclaireur

10 place des Victoires, Rue herold 75001 (For the secret Tim Burton-esque shop)

Marithé et François Girbaud  (great french jeans and general kooky and chic things).
And of course, Collete
Have fun! And for your information, August is such a great time to go as it is so quiet, and don’t forget to pay a visit to the YSL exhibition.

Hair Sponge

When I’m working I pop a hair sponge around my wrist to hold pins and grips. It makes for easy access so you can concentrate on styling and holding up the hair. Mine is from www.sallybeauty.com but you can also buy them at Boots. I was on a beauty shoot for Marie Claire last week, pinning up a topknot in a style favoured by the likes of Chloё Sevigny and many an East London hipster chick, when it dawned on me that sponges would make it so much easier for girls to do the style themselves.

Holiday Style

One person who has dramatically changed my approach to holiday style is my best friend Lisa, who puts the G into holiday Glamour.
Before vacations with her I was a ‘Topshop bikini and flip-flops’ type of girl, my holiday wardrobe and beauty regime was an afterthought. I picked up my skincare in Boots in the airport and packed a few cheap bikinis with a well-worn pair of bleached shorts.

So I was given a fortnight’s ‘summer style training’ course on our first vacation together in India, where I returned less burnt and with a deeper tan from exfoiliating daily and using better sun cream. Add to that a vintage sari for my new summer wardrobe and a desire for a well-cut bikini that won’t go baggy on it’s second outing.
I was told when a lady can safely walk in sunlight (after the harsh midday light), as the blazing sun shows off bad body tone even when there is little to see, so that is when the paparazzi get the unflattering shots of unsuspecting celebrities. I returned with the prettiest holiday snaps that I have ever had, the ‘golden hour’ was the busiest snapping period, thanks to advice from years of working with photographers.

So here I am in Santorini, Greece – the new, more glamourous, summer me! And I am mixing Golden Sun Shimmer in with my sun cream so I sparkle in the sun. Sisley has a dry sun oil that when you put in your hair and comb through with a wide tooth comb makes you look like you’re on a beauty shoot. I applied this as recommended this week by Grazia’s beauty director Annabel Jones, and also used Stila Sun Shimmer.
The most important thing I have learnt is that you should spend as much as you can afford on great sun protection. My favourites are Sisley and Clarins.
And of course lathering your hair in sun protection is a must. Do this as often as you re-apply suntan cream.
The biggest tip I have is to thoroughly wet your hair under the shower before entering the pool or sea as your hair can only absorb so much at a time, so let it be fresh water!
I have also invested in a body-sculpting swimsuit and am sporting the new Chanel sunglasses with the cutest bows on the side.
My hair is coloured blonde and this has a tendency to go warmer in the sun, so I pack a Silver Shampoo for blondes (mine’s by Wella) this neutralises the tone and keeps it to the beige/ash vibe I prefer.
It’s a good job I learnt all this as it’s super stylish in Santorini and so I stroll down the white marbled streets with a new-found summer confidence.
