The Freja layer

August’s cover of British Vogue was beautifully bright orange and pink with girl of the moment Freja Beha Erichsen gracing the cover. As it sat there on the shelf, I wanted to scream out “Woo-hoo”, but this is often unwise in WHSmith! There it was, a hairdresser’s dream cover, I thought. Freja has the perfect haircut not only for the season, but that type of cut that only really comes around every few years or so. A big impact cut, wantable, wearable, cute, yet hot… I could go on and on.

Of course she has an amazing face but this cut has the right amount of many things that make it suitable for so many people – hurrah!
She has had her hair like this for a while of course, but when put on the cover it makes it all the better to many. The hype started picking up speed when Grazia this week ran a whole feature on it, saying “this chestnut-brown layered cut is about to spark the kind of hair hysteria not seen since The Rachel”. So I just wanted to add my tiny little bit! My concern is that some hairstylists may take off the front corner in a slightly rounded way while over-excited that they are getting to cut in major layers. Freja’s cut, although layered, has the strength of a square baseline. Cut off that front corner at your peril as you could be gazing in the mirror awaiting the cool Freja Layer only to see a slightly mumsy version and wonder where it all went wrong. But this is a minor point, it’s such a beautiful style that will transform many a chick to a more modern and cooler look. What I love about the fact that it’s on Freja, who is THE model of the moment, is that because she features in so many ad campaigns this season, you get to see so many style versions of the cut, from tousled loosely to a full blown-out and tong, which is incredibly useful to both the client and the hairstylist. I put it to you that it could not be better, I adore the Freja Layer.

    Dear Zoe,

I want the Freja Layer! I’m obsessed with it but, in the way that I’ve wanted some kind of Patti Smith type ‘do’ for the past five years, although when I read that Patti based her hair on Keith Richards’ style it put me off a bit. What do you reckon? Would it work on my scraggy hair (you know what a nightmare my fringe was)? I’m just so sick of how boring my hair is. Or should I just stop whining and get a Winge?
    Axx

Great post! I’ve also been contemplating getting my hair chopped like Freja (I hate it when people do this, wanting to look like a famous person! Hypocrite, that’s me!). The thing is I’m too embarrassed to take a photo of Freja to the salon. Ooopsie! Anyway, fab blog! xx
