My blonde month started with a call from Pixie Lott’s mum. She called me on a saturday afternoon after a recommendation from Caroline Barnes, the celebrity makeup artist, and asked me if I could come over to colour her daughter’s hair. Now, of course, I had heard of Pixie. She is the beautiful, pale blonde with the big voice and hot song that is currently Number One in the Charts.
So off I trot on a Sunday night with a bag full of tints in every possible shade. We ate chinese and I applied in turn five different hues of pastel, beige and sand. I had a one-on-one lesson of the Pixie Clap Dance (it’s addictive) and left with the song in my head and a dance move to impress the salon juniors (I am soooooo down with it).
A few days later I found myself in a suite at The Berkeley with Cat Deely, who was over from LA to do press interviews for the Walkers crisp ad that she’d just shot with Gary Lineker. I had actuallly been dying to meet her as her best friend is a friend of mine and I had heard so many funny stories about her. She is the kinda girl that you would love to have as your friend. I blew her hair out with NO product (which my god must be a first for me). Her hair is insanely great and gave me the most hair envy that I have ever had. We talked shoes and boys and ate packets of Walkers. It was one of those days that I think to myself How did I land such a great job!!! She is now my ultimate soft, creamy blonde icon. She wore a playsuit and flats and inspired me to rethink my summer wardrobe and maybe my new Colour Crushes.
My best friend, Lisa, has been lightening up her hair for the past year. I started by placing packets of lightener just through the underneath and then toning them with an ashy wash when they lifted. But this month I decided to ooomph it all up a notch and grabbed random chunks and coated them with a fistfull of lightener to make it surfier and edgier. This was mixed with one week in St Lucia, a fortnight in Cuba and a week in South America, which makes it a little tricky when clients walk into Hari’s requesting Lisa Snowdon honey hair. It has been developed over a year of adding and toning and lying in the sun! The funniest thing is they don’t know that I do Lisa’s hair so they bring out a pic and say “Can you make me look like this” and I mutter the words of colourists all over the land: “Of course I can , I know just how.” I am thinking of doing a deal with Virgin Airlines tying in a sun holiday with a set of Hari’s lights to truly get the effect!
I’ve been sending my clients off on their holidays with bottles of gloss veg colour to match their tone. Who wants to get five days in and feel like their colour’s ropey? A lot of colourists tell their client to have a colour when they get back. I say why? You pay a month’s wages to go on a holiday, do a load of extra sweaty work in the gym and plan the bikini looks so….why sit on the beach with roots?
After fashion shoots with blondes, topping up Donna Air’s soft ash and developing the perfect beach blonde at Hari’s, I end my month with another visit from Pixie. She sings as I put in her lights and reminds me that the blondes I get to hang with have sooooo much fun.
