While Amy Winehouse was a singing sensation whose voice was impossible to copy, her rockabilly ’50s style set off a number of homages. Rebellious, trashy and tarty, it’s not exactly a style that screams couture. But French rebel of fashion Jean Paul Gaultier had other ideas and Winehouse was his overriding influence. A doo-wop quartet provided the soundtrack to a collection of pencils skirts, nipped-in waists and Fred Perry-esque polo shirts, and while other shows stuck to a simple, slick ponytail or bun, Mr Gaultier sent his models dancing down the runway with oversized beehives, beauty spots and winged eyeliner. The beehives featured loose strands, strong primary colours and a side-parting flicked to one side. Jean Paul Gaultier has a penchant for the beehive as showcased in his A/W11 collections, where granny knits ruled and silver hair shone. If you like beehives then take a look at the Headmasters Beehive Masterclass.
