It may only be February, but that doesn’t mean I’m not already wishing the year away. April sees Salon Smart, Creative HEAD’s buzzing business-networking event, return to London for the sixth year – and I for one will be there with bells on! Although the thought of a three course dinner and top London hotel is enough to make me go weak at the knees, it’s the après-dinner session with hairdressing idol Andrew Collinge that ensured my seat was secured within hours of tickets going on sale. Andrew Collinge is one of Britain’s most iconic hairdressers. Starting out on an apprenticeship with his father Peter Collinge OBE, Andrew joined the team at top Mayfair salon Michaeljohn. Since then, he’s built up an overwhelming CV, opened a luxury makeover studio in Harrods with his wife – make-up artist Liz Collinge, racked up awards, and opened The Andrew Collinge Graduates Salon in Liverpool. He may be enjoying an epic career, but Andrew still makes time for his peers. At Salon Smart, he’ll be taking to the stage, taking us through his incredible journey and creating some of his signature looks in front of our eyes – the perfect after-dinner treat! Sold! Street-style photography has become a phenomenon, whether it’s blogs like The Sartorialist and Facehunter or the pages of fashion glossies such as Grazia and Elle, it’s a huge source of inspiration for trend forecasters, designers and hairstylists. The New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham was a pioneer of the trend and has been obsessively snapping the fashion elite and well-dressed average Joes for years. And like any major figure in fashion, he now has his own documentary, entitled Bill Cunningham New York.
Now in his eighties, Bill Cunningham still has an eye for fashion. “The best fashion show is definitely on the street, always has been and always will be,” he said. Anna Wintour once said: “We always dress for Bill.”
The hype around the film has travelled to these shores and one year after its US release, selected cinemas across the UK will be screening the film during February and March.

It’s not long now till the international fashion weeks kick off and I find myself knee-deep in back-to-back shows, early mornings and late nights with a lack of nutrition in my system. So, before all hell breaks loose, Creative HEAD teamed up with The Show Space and Sunday Times Style to bring The Show Space Re-Treat, an exclusive destination for pre-Fashion Week pampering.
Held at the Red Bull Studios in London, journalists, models and all the key industry players were invited to enjoy complimentary sessions over yesterday and today with some of the leading brands from the hair and beauty industry. You wanted a flawless tan? St.Tropez smothered you in Mediterranean sunlight. A head of tumbling curls? L’Oréal Professionnel and RUSH salon were on hand to ensure you came away with a beautiful blow-dry. A face of expertly applied make-up? Maybelline New York had you runway-ready in under 30 minutes. And the male of the species didn’t miss out either, The Man-icure was a speedy hand massage and tidy-up for stylish males on the go. I came away ready to take on the following fashion month looking and feeling fabulous!
A massive thank you to…
Maybelline New York

KeraStraight

What do you get if you combine a global colourist, beauty editor from one of Britain’s favourite weekly glossies and an all-in-one super-star stylist, educator and true inspiration? A sensational evening at The Coterie! I was so excited I arrived unfashionably early and so did quite a number of other guests, it seemed we were all so keen to grab a an extra special view of guest-speakers, colourist Josh Wood, Grazia’s Lauren Murdoch-Smith and ghd ambassador and Headfirst blogger Zoë Irwin.
With canapés a-plenty and enough wine to keep thirst at bay, it was a chance to mingle with the who’s-who of the industry, filling up that contacts book and find out just how the big names made it.
Head over to www.the-coterie.net/news and find out more about the night.

1 FebTaylor Taylor London launched their YouTube channel last September to fill a void in their online presence and have since released various videos, from showcasing the talents of the stylists to this most recent one, A Magical Place, a rather swish commercial for their flagship Shoreditch salon. The audience are invited on an intriguing tour of the salon in an Alice in Wonderland style journey. Take a trip and be enthralled!

There’s nothing quite as ‘proper’ as going to a book launch, and what better than a book launch held in a glamorous salon? That’s exactly what happened last week when Hellen Ward, co-owner of Richard Ward Hair and Metrospa, celebrated the release of not one, but three business books.
If you’re already a salon owner, or you’re looking to open your salon, Hellen has been kind enough to share her pearls of wisdom with the world, putting it all down on paper and writing three books; “Getting Established,’ ‘Managing Finance’ and ‘Team Performance.’ The trio tells you all you need to know about owning your own salon, and making your business thrive and succeed.
Wine in hand and mini quiche at the ready, we sat down to hear all about the writing process from Hellen, interviewed by L’Oréal Professionnel’s Gill Pope. On writing the books, Hellen said, “business isn’t complicated – if I can’t explain it to my eight year old son, then it’s too complicated, and didn’t go in the book.” Hellen has written the books in ‘hairdresser’s speak,’ making it easy to digest but still including any tricky bits that are vital in making your business work.
The books are priced at £12.99 and are available from www.ultimatesalonmanagement.com

While Amy Winehouse was a singing sensation whose voice was impossible to copy, her rockabilly ’50s style set off a number of homages. Rebellious, trashy and tarty, it’s not exactly a style that screams couture. But French rebel of fashion Jean Paul Gaultier had other ideas and Winehouse was his overriding influence. A doo-wop quartet provided the soundtrack to a collection of pencils skirts, nipped-in waists and Fred Perry-esque polo shirts, and while other shows stuck to a simple, slick ponytail or bun, Mr Gaultier sent his models dancing down the runway with oversized beehives, beauty spots and winged eyeliner. The beehives featured loose strands, strong primary colours and a side-parting flicked to one side. Jean Paul Gaultier has a penchant for the beehive as showcased in his A/W11 collections, where granny knits ruled and silver hair shone. If you like beehives then take a look at the Headmasters Beehive Masterclass.
