Our Most Wanted Session Stylist of 2011 winner, Californian-born James Pecis,
has been on the circuit for over 12 years now and has quickly established himself as a major player. Here he lets us in on the creative spirit behind those handsomely tattooed hands and the visions they have brought to life.
What was your most memorable show?
There have been many shows that have meant a great deal to me, such as Anne
Valérie Hash, which I’ve been doing for the last eight seasons. Peachoo + Krejberg S/S10 was a fun challenge – I will always remember the feeling I had when all the girls lined up, they looked amazing. And of course, Meadham Kirchhoff continues to challenge my team and I each season. The coloured hair of S/S11 was a great moment.
Any fashion disasters?
My first assistant Yumi and I show up everyday wearing the same thing and look like twins… we spend too much time together!
What has been your fashion highlight?
I’m really not into fake, highlighted hair. I think natural or sun-kissed is better…
What’s your ultimate way to unwind after fashion week?
There is so much adrenaline from the month of shows that I find it very hard unwind, I am beyond physically exhausted but I don’t want it to stop. I get addicted to the rush of it all. But my team and I do go for drinks after the shows.
Who is your mentor and why?
Jimmy Paul has taught me so much about the business. His eye is unmatched and I always think ‘what he would do?’ if I am in doubt. I also worked with Laurent Philippon, whose French technical skills are part of my everyday work, and Howard McLaren has always believed in me and pushed me in the right direction. I am always in contact with Howard and 15 minutes of being around him can inspire me for months. These three men have shaped what I do and how I do it.
What are your words of wisdom for aspiring session stylists?
Work hard, always practice, remain humble, and keep it positive.
What’s hot for AW/11?
Right now snakes, playing with colourful clothing and NYC are hot! I was in New York a short while back and it was 34°C.
What were your favourite shows from A/W11?
I really enjoyed Meadham Kirchhoff, Peachoo + Krejberg, and Louise Amstrup. I think Guido did an amazing job on Dolce&Gabbana this season too, very clever.
