After a 31-year career at Vidal Sassoon, Tim Hartley has started a synergetic collaboration with Davines. Tim talks to Headfirst about his latest collection for the brand, inspirations and new ventures

What inspired your latest collection for Davines?
The graphics of Saul Bass and the style of Herb Ritts. I wanted the pincurls to create natural-looking texture also.

What were your kit-bag must haves for the shoot?
Davines For Wizards No. 1 Finest Oil Non Oil for shine and No. 9 Structuring Mist for support.

What’s in the pipeline?
The next big thing for me is WWHT10* in Berlin on 2 to 6 October. The World Wide Hair Tour is a global event staged by Davines and is such an experience, exploring global trends and advanced styles. Along with my team at Environment, we have a very powerful look to present. I have done some of my strongest work in Germany and Berlin is the ultimate city, constantly reinventing itself and a never-ending source of inspiration.

What do you like most about Davines?
Davines for me has all of the style and fashion sense you come to expect from a top Italian brand.

What inspires you most?
Music, film and fashion are constant inspirations.

What A/W trend are you digging?
Phoebe Philo’s divine take on minimalism at Céline.

What’s your favourite city?
London, every time!

What else are you working on at the moment?
I’m looking forward to expanding my education system with my team at Environment on Duke Street. They are the best team and are led by Kiyo Inoue. Kiyo is my right hand creative support and we work very closely on my projects. I’m also working on my DVD collection and my new Tim Hartley scissor range. The DVDs are archive edits of the collections that I have produced for Davines. When I left Sassoon they owned all of the work I had produced during my long career so I decided to start again and bring my new work to a wider audience. I call this fast-forwarding the history and love the concept.

*Taking place in Berlin this October, Davines World Wide Hair Tour is a global event with performances by hair pros of international fame, exclusively for Davines partners. It’s a chance to discover future trends and network extensively. For more information contact Marianna Carasi at wwht2010davines@travelservice.it
