The trend
Clashing and contrasting jewel, neon and tutti-frutti tones scream: “It’s summer – look at me!” Traditional colour-wheels are delightfully broken – take heed, it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Labels we loved
Issa: Issa presented an exotic world: hyper-rich shades of pink, purple and primary colours on Indian-inspired silk-jersey silhouettes.
Christopher Kane: The winner of this year’s BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund, Christopher brought us fluro acid tones in twinsets and oh-so ladylike dresses made of materials such as lace and leather – the future’s bright!

Catwalk colour
‘For those who like to make a statement, there is only one colour story this season – primary block colours with an expensive jewel-inspired twist create impact, and demand attention,” reveal Hooker & Young. “Not for the wallflowers – think a more subtle, toned down version of Nicki Minaj.” With amythest and sapphire jewel tones from Schwarzkopf Professional’s Urban from Essential Looks S/S11, as session stylist Tyler Johnston says: “It’s a ‘go for it’, ‘wear your hair’ kind of trend.” “These contrasts can be extravagant and powerful, this look is always strong and individual, so not for the faint hearted,” admits Mark Leeson, Most Wanted Colour Expert 2010. For the less adventurous, think about dip-dye techniques melding brunette and blonde. See Glamazon from Wella Professionals Trend Vision 2011 and Sunset Horizon from L’Oréal Professionnel. Clash cleverly in a look that’s bound to attract the confident client.

“Think cooler and warmer shades placed against each other, with simple block colour and clever sectioning to create a clash that crosses over to create multi-tonal effects.”
AJ Blackadder, group technical director, Andrew Barton Salons
