LA-born Sky Ferreira may only be 19, but she’s certainly racked up quite an impressive CV, and this year has seen the release of her EP As If! Her moody, grungy persona is reflected in her hair – long and unkempt – and the girl is definitely not afraid of her roots. She even has a blog named and dedicated solely to her hair. All that, teamed with a heavy dose of teen attitude, and it’s fair to say we’re obsessed! Caroline Spencer, colour director at Sassoon Academy UK, delves in to the locks that everyone loves!
The look: Sky is working the current trend for all things laid back and ’90s grunge. Pretty red lipstick on an otherwise nude face, logo t-shirt and cardigan. Her hair completes the look and has that cool, slightly fuzzy texture. A heavy fringe is drawn across the forehead and slightly trails into the eyeline, a mixture of innocence and rebellion.
The palette: The hair has the natural colour at the root, which is something that is really popular right now as the dark roots and bleached mid-lengths and ends has a slightly irreverent attitude. The lighter hair could have faded from brighter colours and is now a combination of a soft powdery pink and a kind of antique rose gold, a unique colour that satisfies this rebel’s search for individuality.
Technique: This look can either have grown out from a full head bleach or very light tint, or a full head of very thick highlights, which has allowed the natural colour to come through at the root. It could also have been achieved with sections of bleached slices or chunky highlights, carefully placed to avoid the roots. I particularly like the way the underneath layers are a little darker, which gives shading to the style. The pale accent colour over the top could be achieved with a baby pink water rinse, or could also be brighter colours that have gradually lost their intensity over time, resulting in this muted, dusky effect.
Alternative take: At Sassoon Academy we are always trying out different ways to add dimension to any hair shape with colour. At the moment we are playing around with an idea that we call colour graduation. Colour that changes along the hair shaft from for example brighter, lighter ends through to deeper tones at the root. It creates a cool, contemporary look that is perfectly in step with the long-haired retro style that is popular right now.
